Most patients leave the hospital the same day.  Packing is in the ear canal which is removed on the third or fourth day.  Stitches, if any are present, are removed 7 to 10 days.  Antibiotic ointment should be placed on the skin wound three times a day for 7 to 10 days.  Care should be taken not to get water in the ear for at least 4 weeks.  No flying or subjecting the ear to pressure changes for 6 weeks.  Do not blow your nose and if you sneeze, sneeze with your mouth open.   I usually suggest wearing a head band to hold the external ear by the head, helping it to heal in the proper position.  A hearing test is usually obtained 3 to 6 weeks after the surgery.
