Hearing aids have an average lifespan of 3-7 years. How long they last depends on how well you care for your devices. You should bring your hearing aids in every six months for a maintenance check and clean them every day. While hearing aids will last you for many years, new technology is released around every 3 years, which is when many patients like to upgrade their devices.
If you have a current hearing loss or you are over the age of 55, it is recommended that you have your hearing checked every year. If you are under the age of 55 and do not have a current hearing loss, then you should have your hearing tested every 5 years.
85 decibels (dB) is the safe threshold for sound. Sounds under 85 dB are safe for any amount of time while sounds 85 dB to 100 dB can cause hearing damage when exposed to for a certain amount of time. Noise that exceeds 100 dB can cause irreversible damage to your hearing after a one-time exposure. Any time you are exposed to sounds over 85 decibels you should wear hearing protection.
Ringing in the ears is tinnitus. If you have recently been exposed to loud noise, you could experience some ringing in the ears temporarily. If your tinnitus does not go away within a couple days, contact us immediately for an appointment.
