Hearing Tests in Franklin, KY

A hearing test is necessary for the accurate diagnosis of hearing loss. At Hear KY, we offer diagnostic hearing tests for individuals of all ages. Hearing loss is measured in degrees: mild, moderate, moderately severe, severe or profound. To determine what degree of loss you have, a hearing test will need to be administered. During the hearing exam, you will sit in a soundproof booth with a pair of headphones on and listen for a series of sounds that vary in volume and frequency. Our hearing specialist will track what you can and cannot hear on an audiogram. We will also perform a word recognition test to assess your ability to hear speech in quiet and in noise.

Hearing Aid Evaluations

The purpose of a hearing aid evaluation is to determine what kind of hearing aid will best match your lifestyle, degree of hearing loss, individual needs, and budget. Using the results of your audiogram, as well as a conversation with you, our audiologist will recommend the right hearing aid for your individual needs.

Hearing Aid Fittings

Hearing aids need to be properly fit and fine-tuned to your exact hearing needs. Once you have chosen a device, we will fit the hearing aid to your unique ear shape. Hearing aids should fit comfortably yet securely in/around your ear. Your device should never feel uncomfortable and if it does, let us know so we can adjust it.

After you’ve received your hearing aids, they will need to be programmed based on your hearing prescription (audiogram). Sounds should not be too loud and there shouldn’t be any feedback or whistling. Properly programmed hearing aids will allow you to hear better in quiet and noisy environments while helping you discern the person speaking.

Hearing Aid Repairs

Although hearing aids are incredibly durable, sometimes they require maintenance or a repair. At Hear KY, we can expertly troubleshoot any issues with your hearing aids and get them performing their best again. Whether you need the settings fine-tuned, a dome replaced, or a new wax guard, our hearing specialist can help. Most hearing aid repairs can be made the same day in-office. If your hearing aids have suffered more severe damage, then we may need to send them to the manufacturer to be repaired.

In addition to repairs, we also offer professional cleanings on hearing aids. We recommend bringing your devices in every six months for a deep cleaning to ensure your hearing aids continue to perform their best.

Earwax Management

Earwax, medically known as cerumen, despite its appearance is a natural part of healthy ears. However, sometimes earwax can become impacted, causing discomfort, clogged ears, and sometimes muffled hearing. If earwax is bothering you, contact our office for an ear exam. We will look inside your ears and if you have impacted earwax, we can safely and effectively remove it.

Occupational Testing

Hearing tests are required for companies across many industries and are necessitated when a business of any kind has noise levels exceeding the OSHA action level of 85 decibels over an eight-hour time-weighted average (TWA). Hear KY offers a hearing conservation and testing program for OSHA compliance. Our team will provide portable protection solutions that comply with OSHA standards, anywhere you need them. This reduces disruption, travel, and labor cost associated with compliance obligations.

As a Veteran owned hearing clinic, we are proud to offer hearing exams through the VA and Workers Compensation. If you have experienced hearing loss due to military service or occupationally through work, we can help you. Please contact us directly for more information.

Hearing Protection

Loud noise exposure is one of the most common causes of hearing loss in people of all ages. Sound exceeds the safe threshold at 85 decibels (the average level of city traffic). When exposed to noise over 85 decibels over time, irreversible hearing damage can occur. It’s important to protect your sense of hearing by wearing custom fit earplugs or in-ear monitors. At Hear KY, we offer a wide range of hearing protection for musicians, hunters, and occupational workers. Using a mold of your ear, we can create custom fit earplugs or earmolds for peak hearing protection. Don’t let noise induced hearing loss affect you, contact us today for an appointment!

Tinnitus Management

Tinnitus, also known as ringing in the ears, is a common phenomenon in which people hear a sound within the head that is not externally present. These phantom sounds can manifest as a buzzing, humming, ringing, whistling, or whooshing. Tinnitus itself is not a hearing disorder, but rather a symptom of another underlying condition.

There is unfortunately no cure for tinnitus. However, tinnitus masking hearing aids can help. Many hearing aids have a masking feature that can be controlled from an app on your smartphone. The hearing aids will play soothing sounds in your ears which will distract your brain from tinnitus. While hearing aids won’t stop ringing in the ears completely, they can greatly help.
